The Warburton Era – Rangers Revival

*DISCLAIMER* Some newspapers believe to think that Warburton has not resigned but I decided to write this article to show those Rangers fans who think he is under-performing why he was/still is doing a great job.

“Rangers has accepted the resignations of manager Mark Warburton, assistant David Weir & the Club’s head of recruitment Frank McParland.”

This was something I was 100% not expecting, the end of an era when the side was at their peak. It’s a shame to see someone of such quality like Warburton to leave a club with a great future in the league they should’ve never left. But that is life, and Rangers will have to move on.

Warburton (along with Weir and McParland) joined Rangers in June 2015 with the aim to get the Glasweigan back into the Scottish Premier League, a division that they feel should have never left them. Warburton described his appointment as a “tremendous privilege”. He led the Gers to a league and cup double with successes in the second tier Scottish Championship (promotion to the Scottish Premiership) and the Scottish Challenge Cup in his first season. Mark Warburton’s first Old Firm victory came on the 17th of April 2016 in the Scottish Cup Semi-Final. After 90 minutes and extra time Rangers and Celtic were locked in at 2-2 (Kenny Miller and Barrie McKay) on the score sheet for Rangers), Rangers won 5-4 on penalties. Rangers progressed to the 2016 Scottish Cup Final, which they lost 3–2 to fellow Championship side Hibernian. On 12 July 2016, Warburton and assistant manager David Weir extended their contracts with Rangers by a further year.

Despite Rangers not being able to pick up a single point over local rivals Celtic as of February 2017, Rangers have been fairly successful when it comes to league and cup competition, reaching the semi-finals of the Betfred Cup before being dispatched by the other half of Glasgow, and keeping their place in the top 3 of the Premiership table.

It will be interested to see who takes over as Rangers manager heading into the important part of the season (despite it being very obvious who is winning the league). My personal choice would be former Burton Albion and Birmingham City manager Gary Rowett. One newspaper suggested Graeme Souness should take over. As long as they don’t appoint Rob Page then they should be alright… am I right Cobblers fans?!
